Free Resume Writing Tips

After years of experience writing resumes to be presented to managers and agencies, the consultants at Resume Builders have come up with some basic rules about how a resume needs to be written in order to get seen and read

Your resume should conform to the following "best practices" for resume writing:

  1. Use Word documents. It is the standard business format preferred by HR departments and agencies.

  2. The top 25% of the first page of the resume is crucial.

  3. Resume Reviewers should see your main credentials within 10 to 15 seconds of scanning your document.

  4. Resumes should be clean, clear & non-cluttered.

  5. Keep resumes to no more than 2 pages.

  6. A resume is not an autobiography.

  7. Eliminate pictures, hobbies and personal information

  8. Fonts should not be too small or fancy.

  9. Check grammar & spelling. No one wants to hire a worker who doesn't demonstrate attention to detail.

  10. Do not be vague. Talk about specifics.

  11. Be honest. You and your employer will both be happier.

  12. Make sure you show complete name, address, phone number(s) and e-mail address.

  13. Have a resume ready for hiring managers and agencies.

  14. When you send a resume in an e-mail make the resume, itself, an attachment.

  15. Your resume is the first impression you will make on a potential employer. Go to the effort to make sure it is not also your last.
